Earthquake in Haiti

Dear Van Dyke Church,                           March 8th Update

We are saddened by the tragic loss of life and devastation caused by the massive Haitian earthquake.  Obviously the Haitian people are desperate for our help in this dire situation.

Haiti has 19 United Methodist Churches, 25 pastors, and 3,100 members in these churches.  We have a special relationship with our Methodist brothers and sisters in Haiti and they are also a strategic partner for helping in some of the most acute areas of need.

Thank you for praying and providing to bring hope to the people of Haiti.  You will be shining the light of Jesus into the darkness.

Over the past four weeks you gave over $49,000 to our Haiti Relief Offering!  Wow!  I am so pumped about the big hearts at Van Dyke Church.  And I know more people will respond in the next few days and weeks.

God Bless You,

Pastor Matthew

 Update from Acts 1:8 Missions & Outreach

Pray for our Missionaries and Ministry Partners:
Russ Montgomery, Missionary for Living in Faith Ministries, in Haiti at Double Harvest Ministries.

Jon and Julie request we continue to pray for those who are without homes and without direction.  Pray that we (the Body of Christ) will be able to use this opportunity to reach the many hearts that are now open to the gospel.  Pray for the strength of the Haitians, the strength of the "laborers in the field", and for the Glory of the Lord to be shown throughout this desperate situation.

Philip Hall, Missionary for Lighthouse for His Lambs (another Acts 1:8 Ministry Partner) writes to us from Haiti.

Dear Friends,

A big thank you goes to each and every one of you who assisted us in the past month with our ongoing effort to the orphans and orphanages of Haiti. Phase 1 was to ensure the safety of the orphans and make sure supplies were adequate. As you may already have learned the orphanage in Les Cayes and in Kenscoff survived the devastation.   Unfortunately the children and staff of the Port au Prince orphanage did not survive the earthquake. Although our hearts are saddened for our loss we do rejoice in their homecoming with their Lord and Savior.

While in country for this phase of the relief effort we did make many new contacts including a newly formed orphanage at a medical clinic in Port au Prince. We are working with UNICEF to eventually move these children from the clinic to another temporary shelter outside of the city until a more permanent home can be built for them.

 Update from the Florida United Methodist Conference

Thank you for your generous donations and help for the overwhelming needs in Haiti. The response from United Methodists has been amazing.

·         More than $12 million has been given to UMCOR for relief and recovery work in Haiti;

·         Hundreds of thousands of health kits have been delivered to Sager Brown (the UMCOR Depot in Louisiana) for inspection and delivery to Haiti;

·         Thousands more in the Florida Conference await delivery to Sager Brown;

·         $79,340 has been received for the Methodist Church in Haiti through the Florida Conference Advance Special #100190.

In addition, many churches are collecting goods and supplies for shipment to Haiti when transportation and distribution channels are open and clearly defined. The Haiti-Florida Covenant and the Haitian Committee on Ministry are charged with coordinating this effort for the conference.

Thank you for being a part of God’s provision for the Haitian people!

UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief) continues preparation for the extensive period of recovery in Haiti. After completing an initial assessment of damages and needs, UMCOR has compiled a five-year work plan and bolstered strategic partnerships with the United Nations, NGOs and the Methodist Church in Haiti. Click here to learn more.

Members of UMCOR and UMVIM (United Methodist Volunteers in Mission) met in Ft. Lauderdale last week to review plans and strategies for their work together in Haiti. Three Jurisdictional leaders, including our own Paulette West, Executive Director of UMVIM SEJ (Southeastern Jurisdiction), flew to Haiti after the meeting to meet with the Methodist Church in Haiti. While in Haiti, they will be evaluating the situation for preparation to receive volunteer teams. More information should be available in a few weeks. Please visit www.umvim.org to follow the progress of their work in Haiti. While there, you can also register to serve on a team going to Haiti, or you may register directly at http://secure.gbgm-umc.org/HaitiVolunteer.
