Special Friends - Special Needs
At Van Dyke we practice two major teachings. 1) Love God with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength. 2) Love others.
We believe that all people can practice these two commandments regardless of physical ability. We love that a great majority of Jesus' miracles were with individuals with disabilities. His ministry included lame, deaf, blind, mute, and many more unique individuals.
At Van Dyke, we want to minister to your child and to your family in as many ways as possible. We have several programs available to you. Please contact us if you have any questions or desire to enroll in any of these programs.
We have two programs for our Special Needs children on Sunday mornings. Both are during our 9:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. services.
We offer a self contained, one-on-one, classroom for ages 4and up, with Special Needs. This program includes adapted curriculum which addresses group and individual needs. Bible lessons are taught each week and interaction is encouraged.
We offer many children the option to attend Kid's Church with a Special Buddy (one-on-one). This will include music, drama, video, Bible teaching, and hands-on activities with children in the typical classroom setting.
For adults, we offer a self-contained Adult Special Needs Bible Study/Sunday School class at 11:00 a.m. in Portable B. Most of our adults have a one-on-one Special Buddy as well. If the adult wants to attend another adult class, they can with their Special Buddy.
Not every child or adult will need a Special Buddy. That will be determined when you call our Children's Ministry office and speak to our Special Needs Coordinator, Janet Atkinson. Please contact the office prior to attending so we can be prepared with an individual "Special Buddy" for your child or adult if need be. Special events throughout the year are offered including a week-long sports camp, workshops, movie nights, holiday dance and more.
